Government and its partners are doing many things to support healthy living in this province.
With the release of Achieving Health and Wellness: Provincial Wellness Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador, government outlined its actions for wellness for the next three years (2006 – 2008).
- Expand the Healthy Students, Healthy Schools initiative to create school environments that support healthy living for children, youth and the larger school community.
- Expand healthy living community-based programs and initiatives throughout the province to support the wellness priorities.
- Develop and implement a Wellness Grants Program to support health promotion initiatives that address the wellness priorities
- Release and implement Eating Healthier in Newfoundland and Labrador: Provincial Food and Nutrition Framework and Action Plan.
- Implement the Provincial Tobacco Reduction Strategy.
- Implement a Social Marketing Strategy to complement the programs, services and environments that promote and support wellness.
- Establish new regional health promotion and community development positions in each of the regional health authorities to strengthen the capacity for health promotion.
- Allocate regional program funding to regional health authorities for the development and implementation of programs and initiatives to support increased efforts for health promotion.
- Establish additional programs and human resources at the provincial level to enhance health promotion capacity to address and support wellness initiatives across the province.
- Develop a Provincial Injury Prevention Strategy based on a review of current injury prevention practices.
- Implement School Food Guidelines to support the serving and selling of healthy foods in schools.
